Joy photo sharing or a dedicated wedding gallery?

Joy photo sharing now includes shared albums that guests can contribute to without a Joy account. A dedicated gallery is therefore not automatically simpler just because it uses a browser. Compare the actual album settings, free allowance, video requirements and export process before deciding which workflow fits your wedding.

PhotosPlease and Joy Shared Photo Albums side by side

Details about Joy Shared Photo Albums were checked against its own public pages on 2026-10-14. They can change; confirm on its website before you decide.

Where Joy Shared Photo Albums is the better choice

  • Joy's documented free photo allowance is substantially larger than PhotosPlease's planned free plan's allowance.
  • Keeping photos with an existing Joy website can reduce administration.
  • Joy supplies planning tools that this dedicated photo application does not replace.

Start with the current Joy workflow, not an old review

Joy's shared-album help article describes a link and QR workflow with no guest account required. It lists up to 1,000 photos per event without charge, with higher storage requirements handled through support. Those are meaningful advantages if you already use Joy and primarily want to collect photographs. Older advice saying that every Joy contribution needs an app should not be applied indiscriminately to this newer workflow.

This comparison concerns guest photo collection, not the overall quality of wedding websites. It uses published information checked on 14 October 2026 and PhotosPlease's current features. It is not a hands-on performance review. Our own pricing and final packages are still draft, so there is no defensible claim here that switching will save a particular amount.

What does Joy cost, and what are you comparing?

Joy lists its core wedding website, planning dashboard, registry and mobile app as free. Its pricing page also describes optional paid extras, including custom domains, text messaging and premium stationery designs. The cost of the whole wedding-planning setup is therefore a different question from the cost of receiving guest photographs.

Make a photo-specific list before comparing checkout totals: expected uploads, video, any live display, downloadable originals and how long you need access. Ask Joy to confirm requirements that are not settled by the shared-album documentation, particularly higher storage tiers and any paid display option. Do not add unrelated stationery or messaging purchases to one side of a photo-only comparison.

Account-free uploads do not mean identical privacy settings

Joy's documented shared-album setup uses Public visibility with Guest Uploads enabled. The help article says people with that share link can view the photographs as well as contribute. Decide whether that audience is right for your event before distributing the code. A couple collecting material privately may have a different requirement from a couple inviting everyone to browse.

In PhotosPlease, guest uploads use the event link without an account, and the host can configure guest gallery visibility. Test the chosen combination rather than assuming that collecting, browsing and displaying are the same permission. If a future film-roll reveal is active, the guest gallery and slideshow remain hidden until that reveal; it is not a selective delay applied only to particular camera shots.

Keep planning and photo collection together—or separate them

One combined service can be easier to administer. You may already have the Joy event details, guest communication and website link in place. Keeping the album there removes a second host account and can make the post-wedding handover more familiar. That is a genuine reason to stay, not a compromise that needs to be explained away.

A separate gallery can make sense when the photo collection needs its own host workflow, event-specific instructions or a dedicated reception display. It does not require abandoning the planning website. Where your website allows an ordinary external link, you can point guests to the collection separately; verify the current editor options rather than assuming an embedded integration exists.

Evaluate the archive, not just the collage

Ask what the downloaded collection contains and how you retrieve a whole event. A photograph appearing sharply on a phone is not evidence that the original file, metadata and every video will survive an export unchanged. Export a representative sample before you promise relatives a printable collection.

PhotosPlease keeps the uploaded originals and generates separate previews. ZIP export is enabled in its planned Starter, Standard and Pro plans, not Free. This reflects the planned plans, not a final offer. The Joy pages checked here do not establish every retention or bulk-export condition, so confirm those details directly instead of treating an undocumented answer as a missing capability.

A practical decision for three different weddings

For a small wedding already organized in Joy, try its existing shared album first. If the guest journey, allowance and export meet your needs, buying a second tool may add little value. Have one Android user and one iPhone user complete the test before you print instructions.

For a wedding with a private collection phase, map the visibility settings carefully. For a multi-part celebration, decide whether separate albums actually help guests choose where to upload. For a reception with a screen, test the display independently from the gallery. These requirements—not a blanket label such as all-in-one or specialist—should determine the shortlist.

From PhotosPlease

Where PhotosPlease fits alongside Joy

PhotosPlease focuses on the guest-media workflow: browser uploads, an event QR code, host organization and plan-dependent downloads, slideshows and audio messages. It is not a replacement for Joy's RSVP, registry or wedding website. Try the photo journey using sample files, then choose it only if the differences solve a requirement you actually have. Final prices are not set yet.

Questions and answers

Do Joy guests need an account to upload photos?

Joy's current Shared Photo Albums help article says no account is required to contribute through the shared link. That should not be confused with older instructions for other Joy photo features. Test the specific album and link you intend to share.

Is Joy photo sharing free?

The checked shared-album documentation includes up to 1,000 photos per event at no charge. Higher storage needs should be discussed with Joy. Optional products elsewhere in the planning platform may have their own charges.

Can I keep Joy and use a different photo gallery?

Yes, the planning website and guest photo collection can be separate. Give guests one clear collection link and use the website's supported linking options. This is not a claim that either product has a native integration with the other.

Is a Joy shared album private to uploaders?

The documented guest-upload setup allows anyone with the share link to view the album as well as add photographs. Read the current visibility controls carefully if your intention is to collect material for the hosts without letting every contributor browse it.

Which service has better video support?

Confirm the current package, accepted files and export behaviour for both services. PhotosPlease accepts supported video formats but does not transcode every uploaded codec into a universally playable version. No cross-device video benchmark was performed for this comparison.

Should we switch if our Joy album already works?

Not without a specific reason. First identify a missing requirement, test the alternative and download your existing collection. If Joy already handles your guest uploads and archive well, staying avoids a link change and an extra account to manage.
